Reviews Melanie Fernandi live @ the Contour Lured by the promise of soulful grooves and alcohol, I
find myself with a cigarette and a drink at the Contour on a quiet Friday
night. I sip through a quick soundcheck and then sit back to enjoy Melanie
and her band. The band moves through a solid set, with the vocals hinting at
the better parts of your favorite Tracy Chapman or Heather Duby song. The
music moves solid and precise, but still with that soul, which keeps me
smiling. The drums and bass keep the heart beating, the second guitar gets in
your blood, and Melanie's guitar holds you in a warm embrace as her
voice moves in and gives you that perfect kiss... Like your best friend letting
you know that everything's going to be alright. The dynamics move
smooth from that bluesy gutsy kick that belts out the emotion and makes your
hips start to move before you realize it, to those soft times when the
shadows hit. Those sad notes that just get you where it hurts, and still... It
hurts just right, and even in those melancholy moments Melanie's voice
just keeps you grinning, regardless. The end of the set hits with a
brillant cover of "Spooky" as I finish my drink and the song
keeps me swooning all the way home. -Marcel Feldmar (Easy Street
Records) (The Big
